From the doctorDr. Enker, who completed his undergraduate studies at Yeshiva University, served as Assistant and then Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Chicago until 1979. He also served as the University's Principal Investigator of the Gastro-Intestinal Tumor Study Group multi-disciplinary trials and on the Committee on Immunology. He was awarded a Junior Faculty Clinical Fellowship by the American Cancer Society from 1974-77. From 1979 through 1995, he served as an Attending Surgeon on the Colorectal Service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and as an Associate Professor and Professor of Surgery at the Cornell University Medical College, in New York. From 1979-1984, Dr. Enker was Chief of Colorectal Surgery and, in 1985, he was awarded the highest teaching honor of the Department of Surgery at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Enker has over 150 publications devoted primarily to rectal cancer and has pioneered rectal cancer operations, which now set the standard for high cure rates and prevention of local failure. He is the surgeon who designed the current operations for rectal cancer which are associated with high rates of sphincter preservation and preservation of both sexual and urinary function.
